My Life, My China” is a series of interviews with 10 Chinese journalists who are also Communist Party members talking about their views on the country and its major issues. The fuel for Luo Jun’s Xinhua News Agency editorials is her rage at injustice in all its forms – from official corruption in China to Western double standards. Luo, who manages Xinhua’s social media accounts after two years in London as a political correspondent for the agency, says she has seen official government cars parked outside of entertainment facilities in broad daylight and is aware of cases where money has bought power. For her, the person who embodies the true values of the Communist Party of China (CPC) is her grandfather, a CPC member and toy company manager who cared for others but was always strict with himself. Luo is also very concerned about global terrorism. She condemns the Western-centric view held by mainstream media that refused to acknowledge a 2014 mass knife attack in a train station in Yunnan as an act of terror. “I don’t want that kind of ‘free media;’ I want our media to be responsible and accountable. That’s why I became a journalist for Xinhua,” she said. “My Life, My China” was jointly produced by China Institute, Fudan University and Guan Video. REUTERSThomas WhiteIllustrationSHANGHAI Reuters U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to block a Chinesebacked firm from buying a U.S.based chipmaker this week is detrimental to America’s growth and the global economy, China’s state news agency Xinhua said in a commentary on Saturday. Canyon Bridge Capital Partners’ planned $1.3 billion acquisition of Lattice Semiconductor Corp was one of the largest attempted by a Chinesebacked firm in the U.S. microchip sector and was the first announced deal for the buyout fund, which launched last year with a focus on technology investment. U.S. regulatory scrutiny grew after Reuters reported in November that Canyon Bridge was funded partly by capital from China’s central government and had indirect links to its space program. Trump said in an executive order on Wednesday that Lattice and Canyon Bridge “shall take all steps necessary to fully and permanently abandon the proposed transaction” within 30 days. “The move, which is detrimental to both America’s growth and global economic recovery, also runs counter to the mutuallybeneficial and winwin nature of ChinaU.S. relations,” the Xinhua commentary said. Security reviews of investments in sensitive sectors “should not be used as a tool to implement protectionism”, it added, echoing comments by a Commerce Ministry spokesman last week. Citing analysts who said Trump’s decision was made with an eye to the 2018 midterm election, Xinhua called it “penny wise and pound foolish ... It is a shortsighted move to take protectionist measures amid sluggish global growth.” “Chinese investment is not ‘Trojan Horse’ with hidden purposes,” it said. Trump is set to visit China in November. “The two countries need to strengthen dialogue and communication, promote cooperation and exchanges in various fields and properly handle issues of common concerns. Only then can China and the United States push forward the world’s most important bilateral relationship,” Xinhua said. The Party has poured billions of dollars into expanding Xinhua's reach, with one senior official urging Xinhua to become a "world-class" media. But experts say it would be hard for Xinhua to reach that goal while it remains the so-called "throat and tongue" of the communist party. The Chinese regime's top propaganda official, Li Changchun, praised Xinhua News Agency on its 80th anniversary at a ceremony in Beijing on Monday. Li called on the state-run media to continue serving the Chinese Communist Party and shape public opinion. Li also urged Xinhua to become a "world-class" media, and increase its global influence. The Chinese Communist Party established Xinhua on November 7, 1931 as its mouthpiece. Freelance reporter Zan Aizhong says the news agency will continue to play that role, given Li Changchun's remarks on Monday. [Zan Aizong, Freelance Reporter]: "All of Xinhua's reporting is guided by Party seniors. It reports on matters the Party allows it to report. There's always a yardstick that Xinhua cannot report outside of. It has to follow orders, and is an 'obedient' media. Li Changchun is asking Xinhua to remain obedient, and even more so in the future." In an effort to exert its soft power, the Chinese regime has invested billions of dollars to expand its media. Xinhua is now a prominent feature in New York's Times Square. It also stated a 24-hour news station in July last year. But many commentators like media expert Professor Jiao Guobiao doubt Xinhua's prospects. [Professor Jiao Guobiao, Media Expert]: "As a media outlet, if it cannot operate with the values inherent of a media, it will not be successful, or any success it has will not be for long. If there is no pursuit for true and unbiased reporting, and the press is not guided by freedom and universal values, its goals of success will never be achieved." Xinhua currently has 162 overseas branches, and looks to increase to 200 by 2020. The Chinese regime's push for state-media expansion has not translated to greater press freedom in the country though. Advocacy Group Reporters Without Borders ranks the regime near the bottom of its 2010 Press Freedom Index.
